THE NEW CASPER CARTOON SHOW
Casper originally appeared in 1946, in Noveltoons, theatrical cartoons
produced by Paramount Pictures' Famous Studios animation house. Paramount sold the
character in 1958, cartoons and all, to Harvey
Publishing, the company producing the Casper comic books. Harvey retitled the
original films Harveytoons and teamed up with Mattel Toys to put together the Matty's Funday Funnies series for
ABC-TV. They contracted with Paramount Cartoon Studios to produce new animated wraparounds
featuring the Harvey cartoons and two new characters, Matty Mattel and Sisterbelle,
created especially for the series. In 1962, when Mattel and ABC replaced the Harvey
cartoons on Matty's Funday Funnies with Beany and Cecil, Casper
and company entered syndication.
On October 5, 1963, the Harvey characters reappeared Saturday mornings on ABC-TV as The
New Casper Cartoon Show, featuring an old theatrical Harvey property, along with two
all-new cartoons, again produced under contract by Paramount Cartoon Studios. To provide
variety to the run-of-the-mill do-gooder series, several supporting characters were added
to the new cartoons. Casper was joined by buddies Spooky; Wendy, The Good Little
Witch; and Nightmare the Ghost Horse, along with antagonists, the evil Ghostly Trio. The
series ran until December 27, 1969, the last three months as the re-titled New
Adventures of Casper
